KangXi Lai Le (Chinese: 康熙來了; pinyin: Kāngxī Lái Le; literally "KangXi Arrives" or "Here Comes KangXi") is a Taiwanese topic-based comedy talk show hosted by variety show veterans Dee Hsu (徐熙娣 a.k.a. Xiao S) and Kevin Tsai (蔡康永). It was produced by Chungta Production (中大製作) from 2004 to 2009, and currently produced by Gold Star Production (金星製作公司) along with the writing and production staff of GUESS. It was first broadcast on 5 January 2004 and currently airs Monday to Friday at 22:00-23:00 on cable TV CTi Variety. The hosts interview celebrities and politicians in various and controversial topics while employing their signature comedic bantering in front of a live studio audience (though laugh tracks are used). It is broadcast in Hong Kong on ATV Home under the name of Variety Show of Mr Con and Ms Csi.[1]

Although it is actually broadcast in Taiwan, the show is very successful and popular with Chinese speaking audiences across the world who watch uploaded re-runs over the internet or through bootleg DVDs. Unlike most talk show programs in Mainland China, Kangxi utilizes open discussions containing personal and taboo subjects. The show has been mentioned in other Taiwanese variety and talk shows, mainly from presenters who appeared on the show.

Style

KangXi has made other Taiwanese and Chinese talk show programs emulate their relaxed and witty tone, a very different path from the usual more serious and more focused style. Every episode features a group of entertainers and politicians as guest stars engaging into discussions ranging from gossip to current events.

During discussions, the hosts and the guests would often engage to comical bantering and acts with each other on the focused topic, similar to roasting as most of the exchanges are written before taping. Along with its variety show approach, KangXi frequently accompanies itself with cartoon sound effects, comical use of editing (instant replays and freeze frames) and wacky animated texts and visuals.

Name Clarification

Not to be confused with the Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi, the program’s name “Kangxi” was derived from the names of both hosts. The word “康” (Kang) was taken from the Chinese name of Kevin Tsai and the word “熙” (Xi) was taken from the Chinese name of Dee Hsu.
